ANSWERS FOR ACT:4 MACBETH

Act 4: Answers
Scnene-1
1) An evil atmosphere is generated through thunder, evil cackling, repetition of evil
chant and mention of macabre images such as finger of birth, strangled baby and liver of
blaspheming Jew.
2) The armed head symbolizes Macbeth's fait to be beheaded. The bloody child represents
Macduff who was born unnaturally. The crowned king symbolizes Malcolm being there
rightful owner of the crown.
3) If we were to stage the scene it would be dim and mysterious, and there would be mist
on the ground. To add to the evil atmosphere there would be wind and thunder sound
effects. Finally the cauldron would stand in the center of the stage.
4) Banqua's appearance as father of kings is not optimistic because it shows that his
children would never become kings. This suggests that Macbeth may not live to produce
offspring.
5) Lennox knew how to find Macbeth because he followed him.
6) Lennox is still in Scotland to spy on Macbeth for macduff.
7) Macbeth plans to attack Macduff's castle and kill all his relatives. Macbeth's
character has deteriorated because he no longer feels guilt or remorse when planning to
kill. He also kills without any purpose.
8) Macbeth wants to carry out this plan to discontinue Macduff's blood.
Scene-2
1) We agree with Ross about Macduff's leaving. He is one of many who think Macbeth is a
bad king and one of few who could do anything about it; he therefore, was obligated to
stay alive.
2) The messenger might be a conscious stricken murderer.
3) Scene 3 is included to further tarnish our original impression of Macbeth. Seeing this
scene effects us more than if it were indirectly conveyed through conversation
Scene-3

blamed for it.
